Remembering one day in July

The story of our wedding photos is sort of sad.

To make a long story short, we didn't really get any professional ones. We DID have family/friends with photography experience and nice cameras taking candids. Everyone is a photographer these days. But the person we hired to be our Photographer (so our guests could relax and enjoy themselves) didn't really come through. We ended up with a few folders of unedited photos and all the posed ones (siblings, indoor photo studio) missing.

Bear with me, this post is going to get better!

I've heard people say that the candid photos are the ones from their own weddings that they liked the best. 2 years later, I'm starting to agree. I still want to pick out a few acceptable ones and get them framed, maybe give some away. But the candids are the ones that make me relive that wonderful day.

I think in some ways Andrei and I are still blown away by the things people did to make our day special, or just the way they simply rejoiced with us. I wish everyone's marriage could start out that way! It is certainly meaningful to be in front of that many witnesses. I'm not talking about numbers, though. It's more about a unity of the spirit, if that makes any sense. And I believe that the Holy Spirit was there. Even though there were non-Christians there, I like to think that they saw it, too.

  1. My son and his wife had a photographer and, it seemed like hundreds, of really nice photos.... But, while Susan's mom got her a big album full - they've never opened it! I never ordered any myself, though it is the only family portrait we have... I guess I should, but Ilya hadn't come yet, so it seemed incomplete....

You're making me feel like I should try again and order some!

    1. I guess wedding photos ARE pretty boring in a way. I think I wanted all the traditional shots-the rings, the vows, etc. And I do have some of those, just not from the best angle...partly because we ASKED photographers not to get too close. So I shouldn't really complain. I am still miffed that we didn't get more photos with people like the relatives. But we do have candids, as I said.

I do think you would be glad to have them. I am gradually working on a collection of ones to print, and at the very least, stick in an album.

Of course now I have a whole year of baby photos! And I also have a bunch of photos from when Andrei and I were dating. And some honeymoon pictures, too.

    2. Perhaps "no photos" is a good omen. I have NO photos of our wedding. Not a one. Yes; it was small and intimate, but somehow I lost the few I have in a move and...oh, well.....

However, one time I went to visit an acquaintance, and she sat me down and for entertainment let me look through her wedding photos - beautiful, formal photos...I enjoyed the first book! Then she brought out TWO MORE. I looked at wedding photos for way over an hour...and then, TO MY HORROR, she told me that she'd always REALLY wanted a "country" wedding, and so - they had one! Yes; two months after wedding one, they had wedding two: and - guess what!!?? They took photos at THAT one, too! I was just dying laughing inside when she brought out another big stack of wedding albums! Presuming, I suppose, that there could be no better entertainment for a guest.

But - here's the clincher - she had a baby within the first year, and was divorced before the second anniversary. Sad, and bizarre....but I've always had a skewed impression of wedding photos since then.

  2. Great story you've got there! There have been comments from my friends about the topics you cover, so I managed to drop in. I found your website interesting and practical, so I would recommend this to my family. Keep it up!

  3. I just came across your blog and you must tell me your secret for coping with a Russian man. I'm also an American with a Russian boyfriend and we have countless cultural issues and disagreements. I give you credit for being so happy. :)

    1. I have never really felt like I had to "cope" with my husband. I think you'd have to give me some specific examples. As for happiness, I give credit to God! I have only been married for 2 years, so I'm still learning.
