Forgetting English

Difficult...to speak...in native language.....

Me(or I): "Sveta has a girl."

Mom: "What does 'has a girl' mean?"

Me: "I don't know how else to say that Sveta has a girl. Knows a girl (but that doesn't imply any relationship to the situation)? Has a friend (But that would require further information to clarify that the friend is female and not male)?

Mom: "Ah. Your English is getting rusty perhaps."

Me: "Perhaps."

  1. Hmmm, seems like the explanation required for this Russian-ism is a lot more involved than just saying that she has a friend who is a girl. Nice way of putting it though, too bad it doesn't translate well. I think that Americans don't quite get the possessive context that implies. Very interesting. :)
